The updated directive aims to enhance operational safety by tightening regulations for personnel assigned to premium passenger services, including Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto trains.
Restrictions on Goods Train Crew
Under the new protocols, the deployment of goods-train loco pilots on mail and express services has been significantly restricted. While Zonal Railways are permitted to maintain a separate panel of A-grade goods loco pilots for emergency operational requirements, these personnel must undergo a mandatory safety screening before they are authorized to work on any passenger train link.
Mandatory Rest and Strict Compliance
The SOP places a heavy emphasis on mandatory rest periods and comprehensive safety checks. According to the board, loco pilots who have not completed their prescribed rest hours will strictly not be assigned duty. The Railway Board has warned that departmental action will be initiated against any officials found booking crew members for duty without ensuring these adequate rest requirements are met.
Digital Monitoring via CMS
To ensure full compliance, the Indian Railways will utilize the Crew Management System. This digital platform will be used to monitor the deployment and working hours of all loco pilots and train managers, ensuring that safety norms and rest period mandates are adhered to across all zones.
