Indian Railways to upgrade 40-year-old ticket booking system by August 2026
Indian Railways is replacing its 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a modern Next Generation Reservation System. This upgrade aims to make ticket booking faster and more transparent for passengers. The new system will be based on cloud technology and will start rolling out from August 2026.
What will change in the new ticket booking system?
The current code-based system will be replaced by a modern browser and mouse-click interface. This change will make the process easier for both railway staff and passengers. One of the biggest updates is that passengers will now be able to choose their preferred seat or berth, similar to how airline tickets are booked. Additionally, tickets bought from counters will be sent as digital copies via SMS or QR codes to mobile phones.

New features for passengers in RailOne app
The RailOne app will now use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict the confirmation chances of waiting list tickets with 94% accuracy. Passengers can also change their travel dates without cancelling the ticket or paying cancellation fees. To stop irregularities in Tatkal booking, Aadhaar verification has been made mandatory. The system will also support multiple regional languages and provide special facilities for divyangjan and patients.
