Indian Railways Introduces Online Luggage Booking Facility for Passengers
Indian Railways has officially launched a nationwide online booking facility for excess luggage allowing passengers with confirmed tickets to register and pay for additional items from home. The system went live on August 1 2026 aiming to streamline baggage handling and reduce congestion at station parcel counters following a proposal from the Centre for Railway Information Systems on June 25 2026. This new initiative makes travel easier for passengers who need to carry extra items by moving the paperwork and payment online before reaching the station.
To access the service passengers must visit the official IRCTC website select the Luggage Booking option under the Train section and complete verification using a 10-digit mobile number email address and captcha code. This facility is strictly reserved for confirmed ticket holders while passengers traveling with waiting list or RAC tickets remain ineligible. According to Rohit Kumar Joint Director Passenger Marketing the parcel portals are now fully integrated a move confirmed by Hitesh Yadav Senior DCM of the Jodhpur Division North Western Railway.
Free Allowances and Excess Luggage Rules
Passengers are allotted specific free luggage allowances based on their travel class. The permitted limits are 70 kg for AC First Class 50 kg for First Class and AC 2-Tier 40 kg for Sleeper Class AC 3-Tier AC 3 Economy and AC Chair Car and 35 kg for Second Class. Failure to book excess luggage in advance can result in heavy penalties of up to six times the standard rate. The online system provides complete transparency by displaying free allowance limits maximum weight capacities and a detailed list of prohibited items during the booking process.
Important Guidelines for Travelers
For major household shifts or commercial goods officials recommend using the railway dedicated parcel service rather than passenger compartments. Furthermore railway policy dictates that space beneath lower berths is strictly communal and passengers in middle and upper berths within the same coupe or bay retain the equal right to utilize that storage area.
