Indian Railways allows online PRS counter ticket cancellation with updated refund rules

Indian Railways has made travelling easier by allowing passengers to cancel physical counter tickets online from the comfort of their homes. Passengers booking through Passenger Reservation System counters can now initiate cancellations digitally without rushing to the station immediately. Key highlights of this new facility include the requirement of a valid mobile number during booking for OTP verification, the option to use the official IRCTC website or the 139 helpline, and updated refund rules introduced as of April 2026. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that these reforms are intended to curb black marketing and improve ticket availability across the network.
Online Cancellation Methods
To utilize this service online, passengers must have provided a valid mobile number during the initial booking, as an One-Time Password is mandatory for verification. Passengers can process cancellations through the official IRCTC website at irctc.co.in by navigating to the Trains section, selecting Cancel Ticket, and choosing the Counter Ticket option. After entering the PNR, train number, and captcha, the user receives an OTP on their registered mobile number. Once confirmed, the system displays PNR details and the calculated refund, while an SMS is sent to the user. Alternatively, passengers can call the 139 helpline or send an SMS in the format CANCEL space PNR space Train Number to 139, following the automated prompts to receive a confirmation OTP.
Updated Refund Collection Rules
While the cancellation process is online, refunds are not credited back to bank accounts automatically. Passengers must surrender the original PRS counter ticket at a railway station to receive cash. As of April 2026, Indian Railways has introduced universal access, allowing refunds to be collected from any PRS counter nationwide, removing previous zonal restrictions. If a ticket is cancelled more than 24 hours before departure, the refund is available at any PRS location. For cancellations made between 24 hours and the specific cut-off, the refund must be collected at the journey-commencing station or a satellite PRS center.
Revised Cancellation Charges
Updated cancellation policies effective since April 2026 include significant changes for confirmed tickets. A flat charge applies for cancellations made more than 72 hours before departure. Railways will deduct 25 percent of the fare between 72 and 24 hours, and 50 percent between 24 and 8 hours. No refund is granted if cancelled less than 8 hours before the train departure. For RAC and waitlisted tickets, cancellations are permitted up to 30 minutes before departure with only basic clerkage charges deducted. In cases where Indian Railways cancels a train or a delay exceeds three hours, full refunds are processed automatically, and passengers are advised against cancelling these tickets themselves.
