Indian Railways RAC Rules: Seating, Bedrolls & New Updates

Traveling on an Indian Railways RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) ticket ensures you have a guaranteed spot on the train, even if a full sleeping berth is not immediately available at the time of booking. Understanding how these tickets function, from seating arrangements to upcoming digital upgrades, is essential for every passenger.

How RAC Seating and Upgrades Work

When traveling under RAC status, passengers are typically provided with a shared seating arrangement. In this setup, two passengers share one side-lower berth, which serves as their designated seating space during the journey.

While an RAC ticket does not guarantee a full berth initially, there are several ways your status might improve:

  • Cancellations: If passengers with confirmed tickets cancel their bookings before the final chart is prepared.
  • No-shows: If passengers with confirmed berths fail to board the train.

The Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) is responsible for managing these vacancies and allocating them to RAC passengers. It is highly recommended that travelers monitor their PNR status regularly for any real-time updates regarding confirmation.

Bedroll Amenities for RAC Passengers

A common question among travelers is whether RAC passengers are entitled to sleeping amenities. In AC coaches, RAC passengers are indeed entitled to a full bedroll kit. This kit includes:

  • Two bedsheets
  • One blanket
  • One pillow
  • One towel

However, please note that these amenities are not provided in AC Chair Car coaches.

Digital Revolution: Real-Time Berth Updates

Indian Railways is set to modernize the way berth availability is communicated. A new digital system is currently under development, utilizing handheld devices equipped with 4G and GPS connectivity. This technology will allow for real-time updates on vacant berths, with passengers receiving direct SMS notifications regarding availability.

The rollout plan for this system is as follows:

  • Trials: Scheduled for select trains in the Mumbai Central Division by December 2026.
  • Nationwide Rollout: A phased implementation across all 17 railway zones is expected by April 2027.

Critical Changes: Amrit Bharat Express and New Penalties

Amrit Bharat Express Update

Significant changes have been implemented for the Amrit Bharat Express. As of January 2026, the RAC facility has been removed for the Sleeper class in these trains. Passengers booking these services will now only encounter two statuses: fully confirmed or waitlisted.

Increased Penalties and Mandatory ID Checks

Passengers must stay informed about recent regulatory shifts to avoid legal complications:

  • Higher Fines: As of June 20, 2026, the minimum penalty for unauthorized travel has increased from ₹250 to ₹500.
  • Special Checking Drive: Central Railway has initiated a special ticket-checking drive running from October 1 to October 31, 2026. During this period, all passengers are strictly required to carry their original identification documents.
