Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone in passenger transit by recording its highest-ever single-day ticket booking volume ahead of the upcoming festive season. On September 7, 2026, the Passenger Reservation System processed 2,226,786 ticket bookings, surpassing the previous record of 2,045,272 set on August 19, 2025. This massive surge in travel demand is driven by advance reservations for Diwali on November 8, 2026, and Chhath Puja between November 13-15, 2026. To help travellers navigate this peak season smoothly, Indian Railways has introduced special festival trains, upgraded IRCTC server capacity, and cracked down heavily on fraudulent booking activities to ensure fair ticket distribution for genuine passengers.
To manage the escalating passenger volume, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has
doubled its server capacity and implemented key structural upgrades, including the
launch of a new beta user interface on July 15, 2026. Security measures have also been intensified significantly to combat illegal ticketing. The platform's advanced anti-bot infrastructure has successfully
curtailed suspicious traffic by 55-65 percent. Furthermore, authorities have taken strict action by
deactivating more than 30 million suspicious user IDs and blocking over 16,000 illegal email domains.
The Centre for Railway Information Systems confirmed the overall resilience of the network amidst heavy traffic loads. Addressing Parliament in August 2026, Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that comprehensive actions were taken against
13,580 agents and 6,565 railway employees for irregularities and illegal activities related to Tatkal ticket bookings during the 3.5-year period ending in June 2026. Despite minor technical challenges reported by some users on September 11, 2026, which included load errors and booking failures, the system maintained strong momentum by
recording approximately 1.95 million bookings on September 8, contributing to a total of
3 million tickets issued over a two-day period. To further assist passengers during the holidays, Indian Railways has officially announced the deployment of numerous festival special trains across various high-demand routes.
