Indian Railways launches new security operations centers to combat cyber threats
Indian Railways is taking major steps to protect its vast digital network by launching a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy that includes dedicated Security Operations Centers. As millions of passengers rely daily on online ticketing and digital passenger services, safeguarding this infrastructure has become a top priority for railway authorities. - A newly operational Security Operations Center in Gorakhpur began functioning around August 8, 2026, serving as a blueprint for zones nationwide.
- The Gorakhpur facility was established in collaboration with CRIS at a cost of ₹59 crore to monitor IT networks across the Lucknow, Varanasi, and Izzatnagar divisions.

Expanding National Surveillance and Infrastructure
The new Gorakhpur facility is just the beginning of a much larger ₹509 crore project aimed at building similar surveillance centers across all railway zones in the country. Developed alongside the Centre for Railway Information Systems, this initial model successfully detects unauthorized communications and neutralizes potential hacking attempts before they can impact daily train operations or passenger data. Complementing this, the RailTel Corporation has set up a dedicated SOC in Gurugram to deliver centralized monitoring, threat detection, and robust network behavior analysis.
Advanced Defences for Ticketing and Networks
To keep passenger accounts and online reservations safe from scalpers and cybercriminals, the national transporter has significantly upgraded its technical defenses. The online ticketing platform now uses Aadhaar-based authentication for Tatkal bookings, multi-level CAPTCHAs, and sophisticated anti-bot solutions. Furthermore, network security is backed by advanced firewalls and intrusion prevention systems, boasting an aggregate DDoS mitigation capacity of 30 Gbps. All of these operations strictly follow the cybersecurity standards established by CERT-In and the NCIIPC.
Focus on Human Capital and Awareness
Beyond hardware and software upgrades, Indian Railways is actively investing in its workforce. Officers are participating in specialized international training programs, such as cybersecurity governance sessions in Singapore. Additionally, the administration has issued crucial advisories to employees and pensioners to protect them from cyber fraud attempts involving bad actors impersonating senior railway officials. Following the release of the Cyber Security Report 2026 in July, top technology officials have continued to emphasize the urgent need to counter AI-driven threats and build strong indigenous security capabilities.
