Indian Railways will run over 125 special trains for Simhastha 2028 in Ujjain

Indian Railways is making massive preparations to ensure smooth travel for millions of pilgrims attending the upcoming Simhastha Mahakumbh in Ujjain. Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar announced during his visit to Indore on Sunday, September 6, 2026, that Indian Railways will operate over 125 special trains from across the country for the Simhastha Mahakumbh in Ujjain, which is scheduled to take place from March 27 to May 27, 2028.

Western Railway General Manager Ram Ashray Pandey revealed that the total operational scale for the mega-event will reach approximately 7,500 to 7,800 trains. This is a massive jump compared to the 2,600 trains operated during the previous Simhastha. To manage this unprecedented passenger rush, the railway administration is upgrading major rail infrastructure in the region.

Key Infrastructure Upgrades and New Services

To facilitate smooth connectivity, Indian Railways is introducing Vande Bharat Metro services between Indore and Ujjain. Furthermore, an automatic signaling system is being installed on the Indore-Ujjain and Nagda-Bhopal routes to enhance train safety and frequency.

Infrastructure improvements are currently underway at approximately 10 railway stations in the region. A major highlight of this project is the development of a new railway station at Panwasa, which is specifically designed to ease passenger congestion at the main Ujjain station. Additionally, authorities plan to make temporary holding areas for pilgrims operational by December 2027.

Officials have also addressed the planned redevelopment of the Indore railway station, which includes the removal of Shastri Bridge. To ensure uninterrupted passenger movement and convenience during the pilgrimage, all major redevelopment work at Indore station will commence only after the conclusion of Simhastha 2028.
