Indian Railways is taking significant steps to manage the massive rush of devotees travelling for the upcoming Janmashtami festival. With the festival falling on September 4, 2026, authorities have rolled out comprehensive special train operations to ensure smooth and hassle-free journeys. These special services will remain operational from September 2, 2026, through September 6, 2026.
Official confirmations from the Northern Railway and North Central Railway zones highlight that these special services are tailored specifically for pilgrims travelling to major religious destinations. To make travel more flexible, many of these designated trains running towards Mathura and Ringas will feature entirely unreserved coaches, enabling passengers to board simply by purchasing general tickets without advance reservation.
Key Routes and Train Compositions
The expanded festival rail network covers multiple high-demand routes across northern and western regions. Key routes include services operating from Delhi to Mathura, Ringas, and Varanasi; Hazrat Nizamuddin to Mathura; Old Delhi to Ringas and Varanasi; Agra Cantt to Palwal and Hazrat Nizamuddin; and Subedarganj to New Delhi. Furthermore, Western Railway has introduced dedicated special services connecting Ahmedabad and Okha.
While the majority of these festival specials are entirely unreserved, certain services offer reserved accommodation as well. For instance, the Delhi-Varanasi special express, operating under train numbers 04446/04445, will provide a mix of AC, sleeper, and general coaches to cater to diverse passenger preferences.
