Indian Railways issues important guidelines for Tatkal ticket booking protocols

Indian Railways has released a formal reminder detailing the strict schedules and updated protocols for booking Tatkal train tickets. Passengers planning to travel on September 2 must initiate their ticket bookings on September 1. To ensure a smooth journey, travellers should note that booking for air-conditioned classes opens at 10:00 AM, while non-AC classes commence at 11:00 AM. Understanding these timelines and verification rules helps travellers secure confirmed berths without facing last-minute technical hurdles or booking rejections.

The booking process involves specific timings and security measures designed to give individual passengers a fair chance against automated bots and commercial agents. Authorized ticketing agents are completely prohibited from booking Tatkal tickets during the first thirty minutes of each opening window, specifically between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM for AC classes, and between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM for non-AC classes. Additionally, mandatory Aadhaar authentication for IRCTC accounts remains strictly enforced, requiring a compulsory Aadhaar-linked OTP verification for all bookings done online, at physical counters, or through authorized agents.

Recent Operational Updates and Infrastructure Upgrades

West Central Railway introduced a new token-based system for counter bookings to manage rush effectively. Tokens for AC classes are distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM, whereas non-AC tokens are issued from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. These tokens are strictly non-transferable and categorized by priority, with Category A prioritized for immediate family travel. On the digital front, IRCTC has upgraded its server infrastructure to handle a massive processing capacity of 1.5 lakh tickets per minute, pushing online bookings to an impressive 89.84 percent of the total volume.

Quota Limits and Refund Rules

Passengers must keep specific quota limitations in mind when planning their trips. A maximum of four Tatkal tickets may be booked per PNR, and First AC remains completely excluded from the Tatkal quota. Furthermore, no concessions apply to Tatkal bookings. While confirmed Tatkal tickets are generally non-refundable, full refunds are issued for Tatkal waitlist tickets that remain unconfirmed after chart preparation, or if trains run over three hours late from their originating station and the passenger decides not to travel.
