Indian Railways Tatkal Booking Rules and Schedules for Passengers

Indian Railways continues to maintain its structured Tatkal booking system to assist passengers who need to travel on short notice. By allowing bookings one day ahead of the journey, the national transporter ensures that last-minute travel remains accessible. To help passengers navigate these bookings efficiently, here are the key guidelines currently in effect:
- AC class bookings open daily at 10:00 AM.
- Sleeper and non-AC class bookings open daily at 11:00 AM.
- Aadhaar-based OTP verification is now mandatory for all Tatkal bookings.
- Authorized agents are restricted from booking during the first 30 minutes of each window.
New Protocols for Transparent Booking
To curb the menace of bulk booking and unauthorized agents, the Railway Ministry has introduced stricter protocols. Since August 1, 2026, online Tatkal bookings via the IRCTC platform require Aadhaar authentication. Furthermore, as of July 15, 2026, all Tatkal tickets—whether purchased online, at PRS counters, or via agents—require mandatory Aadhaar-based OTP verification. To ensure fair access for individual passengers, authorized ticketing agents are strictly prohibited from booking tickets between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes.
Counter Booking Updates
For those preferring to visit physical counters, the West Central Railway has introduced a token-based system as of August 1, 2026. Under this new process, tokens are distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM for AC classes and 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM for non-AC classes. Passengers must present a valid government-issued photo identity card to receive a token, ensuring an orderly queue for everyone.
Refund Policy Reminders
It is important to remember that confirmed Tatkal tickets are generally non-refundable. However, Indian Railways provides specific relief if a train is delayed by more than three hours at the passenger’s boarding station or if the train’s route is diverted. These measures are designed to maintain transparency and provide a fair, streamlined experience for all railway travellers across the network.
