Indian Railways announces Tatkal booking schedule for journeys on September 8
Indian Railways has officially confirmed the reservation schedule and timing guidelines for passengers planning to travel under the Tatkal quota for journeys commencing on September 8. Passengers intending to secure last-minute confirmed berths must note that reservations for these specific services will officially open one day in advance on September 7. Following standard operating procedures across the network, the booking window for all air-conditioned classes including 1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC, and 3E is set to commence sharply at 10:00 AM. Meanwhile, passengers looking to book tickets for Sleeper and other non-AC classes, which include First Class and Second Seating, can access the reservation portal or counters when their booking window opens at 11:00 AM.
Passengers are reminded that Tatkal bookings require strict adherence to stringent verification protocols. Since July 15, 2025, Aadhaar-based One-Time Password OTP authentication has been made mandatory for all Tatkal transactions, whether processed online via the official IRCTC portal or offline at Passenger Reservation System PRS counters. This security measure is specially designed to prevent unauthorized automated bot bookings and ensure fair, transparent access for genuine travelers across the country.
Infrastructure Updates and Modernization
Furthermore, Indian Railways continues to significantly enhance its digital infrastructure to seamlessly accommodate exceptionally high demand. As of September 2026, the national carrier is actively upgrading its Passenger Reservation System to a modern cloud-based architecture, with the ultimate aim to drastically increase system capacity from 32,000 to an impressive 150,000 tickets per minute. Additionally, in select zones like West Central Railway, innovative new token-based systems have been successfully introduced at reservation counters to better manage long passenger queues and streamline the ticketing experience. Travelers should also take note that Indian Railways is currently running a pilot project to finalize reservation charts 24 hours prior to train departure, which will provide waitlisted passengers with much earlier clarity regarding their final travel status.
