Indian Railways has issued a reminder for passengers planning to secure last-minute journeys, detailing the exact schedule and guidelines for booking tickets under the Tatkal scheme. Travellers looking to book tickets for travel on September 5 can secure their reservations starting September 4, adhering to the standard rule where Tatkal tickets open one day in advance, excluding the journey date. Here are the key details you need to know: The AC booking window opens promptly at 10:00 AM, covering classes such as 1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC, and 3E. The Non-AC booking window commences at 11:00 AM, covering Sleeper, First Class, and Second Seating classes. Mandatory Aadhaar authentication is required for all online Tatkal bookings through IRCTC, a security measure that has been in effect since July 2025.
To ensure a fair and smooth booking process for everyone, Indian Railways and IRCTC have implemented specific restrictions and facilities. Authorized IRCTC agents face strict booking regulations, completely
prohibited from processing Tatkal requests during the first 30 minutes of each respective window, giving individual passengers a better chance at securing confirmed berths. For passengers who prefer visiting physical railway reservation counters instead of booking online, West Central Railway has recently introduced a helpful
token-based system to manage passenger flow efficiently. Under this physical counter system, tokens are distributed between
8:30 AM and 9:00 AM for AC bookings, and from
9:00 AM to 9:30 AM for Non-AC bookings.
Travellers must note that once a Tatkal ticket is successfully confirmed,
Tatkal tickets are generally non-refundable. However, passengers can still claim a full refund under specific exceptional circumstances, which include
train delays exceeding three hours or instances of
route diversions where the passenger chooses not to proceed with the journey. Passengers are advised to keep their IRCTC login credentials ready, complete their Aadhaar authentication in advance, and log in a few minutes before the respective 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM windows open to avoid last-minute technical hurdles.
