New Indian Railways Ticket Cancellation Rules for 2026
Learn the latest Indian Railways ticket cancellation rules and refund policies for 2026. Find out how much you will be charged for cancellations.

Indian Railways has officially updated its framework, introducing new Indian Railways ticket cancellation rules effective November 3, 2026. These changes aim to minimize ticket misuse and provide passengers with a transparent breakdown of how much they will be refunded when travel plans change.
How Much Will You Lose? Cancellation Charges by Timing
The amount you receive back depends heavily on how close you are to the train's scheduled departure. The revised framework outlines specific deductions based on timing and travel class:
Cancellations Made More Than 72 Hours Before Departure
If you cancel well in advance, you will only be charged a flat cancellation fee based on your class of travel:
- Executive/AC First Class: ₹240 + GST
- AC 2 Tier/First Class: ₹200 + GST
- AC 3 Tier, AC 3 Economy, and AC Chair Car: ₹180 + GST
- Sleeper Class: ₹120
- Second Class: ₹60
Cancellations Between 24 and 72 Hours Before Departure
As the departure time approaches, the deductions become percentage-based:
- 72 to 24 hours before departure: 25% of the total fare will be deducted (with additional GST applicable for AC classes).
- 24 to 8 hours before departure: 50% of the total fare will be deducted (plus applicable GST for AC classes).
The Last-Minute Rule: Less Than 8 Hours
If you attempt to cancel your ticket less than 8 hours before the scheduled departure, you will receive no refund. This represents a 100% deduction of the fare.
The Tatkal Trap and Waitlisted Tickets
Passengers booking under the Tatkal scheme should be particularly careful. Once a confirmed Tatkal ticket is cancelled voluntarily, it is entirely non-refundable.
For those traveling on e-tickets, the system handles waitlisted passengers automatically. If your e-ticket remains fully waitlisted after the final chart is prepared, the system will automatically cancel the booking and issue a refund to your original payment method, though a small clerkage fee will be deducted from the amount.
When You Are Entitled to a Full Refund
There is good news if the disruption is not your fault. If Indian Railways cancels a train, passengers are entitled to a full refund. In many instances, this process is handled automatically, meaning you may not even need to file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR).
Important: What Is Never Refundable?
Please note that IRCTC service charges and payment gateway transaction fees are non-refundable under all circumstances, regardless of the reason for cancellation.
