Indian Railways: Nationwide Ticket Checking Drive From Oct 1
Indian Railways is gearing up for a massive nationwide Indian Railways ticket checking campaign starting October 1, 2026. This intensive, month-long drive is scheduled to run through October 31, 2026, and is aimed at ensuring smoother travel and higher revenue integrity during the upcoming high-traffic festive season.
The initiative is designed to tackle several key issues, including the misuse of reservation facilities, the fraudulent use of concessions and passes, and the verification of ticket authenticity. By conducting these checks, the authorities aim to significantly reduce revenue leakage across the network.
Strict Guidelines for Concessions and Passes
To ensure compliance, the Railway Board issued specific instructions to the Principal Chief Commercial Managers of all Zonal Railways on September 25, 2026. According to these guidelines, passengers utilizing various railway passes, specific reservation quotas, or concessional fares must be prepared to present their original identification documents to prove eligibility.
Key requirements for passengers include:
- Group Bookings: For tickets booked for multiple passengers, at least one individual listed on the ticket must possess the required original ID.
- E-Passes and PTOs: Passengers traveling with E-Passes or Privilege Ticket Orders (PTO) must carry their original identity proof. Additionally, they must ensure that their passes have been converted into a valid travel authority before they board the train.
- Unreserved Travel: Authorities will also be focusing on the verification of unreserved train tickets during this period.
Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, emphasized that the drive is intended to promote responsible travel habits during one of the busiest times of the year.
Higher Penalties and Real-Time Authentication
Passengers are urged to travel with valid documentation to avoid legal complications. Under the Jan Vishwas Act of 2026, which came into effect on June 20, 2026, the minimum penalty for traveling without a valid ticket has been increased from Rs 250 to Rs 500.
It is important to note that if a passenger fails to produce an original ID upon request, they may be treated as traveling without a valid ticket. To maintain efficiency and accuracy, ticket checking staff will be conducting inspections across various trains and stations using the TTE App for real-time authentication of tickets and credentials.
