Indian Railways Special Ticket Checking Drive Starts Oct 1
Indian Railways, specifically Central Railway, has announced the launch of an intensive month-long Special Ticket Checking Drive. The initiative is set to run from October 1 to October 31, 2026, aiming to curb the misuse of reservation facilities and prevent the fraudulent use of railway concessions and passes during the upcoming festive season.
According to Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railway, the drive is a proactive measure to minimize revenue leakage and ensure that travel facilities are used legitimately by all passengers.
The 'One Ticket, One Original ID' Rule
To ensure strict compliance, railway authorities are enforcing a 'One Ticket, One Original ID Card' rule. This means that for any ticket involving multiple passengers, at least one person listed on the ticket must be able to present a valid, original identity document during inspection.
Passengers traveling on concession tickets, special quota tickets, or railway passes are strictly required to carry physical, government-issued identity proof. It is important to note that digital copies, photocopies, or screenshots of ID cards are generally considered insufficient for verification purposes.
To avoid being penalized, travelers are advised to carry physical copies of recognized photo IDs, such as:
- Aadhaar Card
- Voter ID
- PAN Card
- Passport
- Driving License
- Recognized Student Cards
- Bank Passbooks
If a passenger fails to produce the required original ID, all passengers associated with that specific ticket may be treated as traveling without a valid ticket, which can lead to heavy fines and legal action under railway regulations.
Increased Penalties and Rigorous Verification
The crackdown comes at a time when penalties for unauthorized travel have become more stringent. Under the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, which became effective on June 20, 2026, the minimum penalty for traveling without a valid ticket or in an unauthorized manner has been increased from ₹250 to ₹500.
Ticket-checking staff will be utilizing the TTE App to conduct rigorous verifications of both reserved and unreserved tickets. This drive will involve a coordinated effort between the ticket-checking personnel and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to maintain order and ensure smooth operations across the network.
