Railway safety boost: Indian Railways to replace century-old track maintenance technology

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a major overhaul of track maintenance and safety systems during the All India Track Maintainers Conference on April 22, 2026. The government will phase out 100-year-old techniques over the next 5 to 8 years. This shift aims to make rail journeys safer and improve the working conditions for track staff.

What are the new technologies being introduced?

Indian Railways is adopting several modern tools to ensure track safety and worker protection. A new mobile safety app using 4G and 5G networks will provide real-time alerts to trackmen about approaching trains. Drones will be used for high-resolution inspections in difficult areas, while Rail-cum-Road vehicles will allow maintenance teams to reach remote locations faster.

How will track maintenance improve in the coming years?

The ministry is focusing on upgrading hardware and machinery to increase efficiency. The number of track maintenance machines will be increased to ensure faster and more accurate repairs. Additionally, trackmen will receive lightweight tools like torque machines and gauge measuring tools within 6 to 8 months to reduce their physical burden.
