Indian Railways ₹10 Lakh Insurance Now at PRS Counters
Starting Oct 27, 2026, Indian Railways extends ₹10 lakh travel insurance to offline reservation counters for just 45 paise.

In a significant move to enhance passenger safety and ensure equality for all travelers, Indian Railways is extending its optional travel insurance facility to offline booking centers. Starting from October 27, 2026, passengers purchasing tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters will have the opportunity to secure comprehensive coverage.
Bridging the Gap Between Digital and Offline Booking
For a long time, travelers booking via the IRCTC platform had access to easy insurance options, while those visiting physical reservation counters did not. This new directive aims to provide complete parity between digital and offline ticket purchasers. The insurance scheme offers coverage of up to ₹10 lakh in the event of accidents or other untoward incidents during the journey.
Minimal Premium for Maximum Security
Passengers can opt for this high-value coverage for a nominal premium of just 45 paise.
The terms and conditions for this offline insurance will be identical to those currently applicable to e-tickets booked through the IRCTC website or app.
Mandatory Requirement: Valid Mobile Number
To avail of this facility at the reservation counters, passengers must adhere to a specific requirement to ensure the policy is valid:
- A valid mobile number must be provided at the time of booking.
- This number is mandatory for receiving policy details directly to the passenger.
- The mobile number is also essential for the registration of a nominee.
The Legal and Administrative Push
This expansion follows significant legal and administrative developments. The move comes in the wake of a Supreme Court order issued on October 6, 2026, and a formal directive released by the Railway Board on October 24, 2026. The Railway Board has already instructed all zones to ensure the system is fully operational by the October 27 deadline.
While the insurance remains entirely optional, officials emphasize that it represents a major step in enhancing safety measures for all classes of travelers. The insurance coverage is backed by a consortium of reputable providers, including:
- Liberty General Insurance
- Royal Sundaram General Insurance Company
- United India Insurance Company
