Indian Railways confirms that unreserved ticket screenshots are invalid for travel

Indian Railways has issued a strict clarification confirming that screenshots of unreserved train tickets are not valid proof of travel. This important rule aims to help passengers avoid unnecessary inconvenience and heavy fines during ticket inspections on board trains and at platforms.

Digital unreserved tickets are only valid if displayed directly within the official RailOne mobile application on the same registered device used for booking. Photographs, PDF copies, or tickets forwarded through WhatsApp and other messaging platforms are strictly prohibited by railway authorities.

Key Rules for Unreserved Rail Travel

Passengers must book their unreserved tickets before the train departs from the boarding station. Any ticket booking made after the actual departure time of the train is considered completely invalid. Travelers are also required to carry a valid photo identity card and ensure their mobile phone is powered on with sufficient battery charge to display the original ticket when requested by the Traveling Ticket Examiner.

These updated guidelines apply specifically to unreserved tickets, season tickets, and platform tickets booked exclusively via the RailOne app. However, this policy does not affect reserved tickets, which are traditionally verified against physical government-issued identification.

Background on the Enforcement Policy

This regulation reinforces the official stance that Indian Railways has maintained since December 2025. While printed paper copies are not strictly mandatory for unreserved app bookings, the digital ticket must originate directly from the original booking device. Railway authorities renewed their strict focus on this policy following recent incidents where several passengers faced heavy fines for presenting simple screenshots instead of original digital tickets during checks on August 31 and September 1, 2026. Commuters are advised to follow these rules carefully to ensure a hassle-free journey.
