Indian Railways enhances Kashmir connectivity with the completion of the USBRL project
The Indian Railways has officially transformed travel to the Kashmir Valley through the successful commissioning of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This massive infrastructure achievement now provides seamless, all-weather connectivity, significantly reducing the travel time between Srinagar and Katra by up to three hours compared to traditional road journeys. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed on August 7, 2026, that this project is already acting as a catalyst for economic growth, enabling local farmers and business owners to transport their goods to major national markets with greater efficiency.
Key highlights of the project include:
- Significant time savings: The Srinagar-Jammu Vande Bharat Express, operational since May 2, 2026, completes the journey in just 4 hours and 45 minutes.
- Economic boost: Faster transit for Kashmiri apples, dry fruits, and Pashmina shawls to boost regional trade.
- Modern safety: Full electrification of the network and the integration of the indigenous Kavach train protection system across 401 route kilometers.
- Engineering marvels: The project features the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji Khad.
Modernizing Infrastructure and Future Expansion
Safety and reliability have been prioritized through the installation of electronic interlocking, complete track circuiting, and Block Proving Axle Counter systems at 11 stations. Beyond the existing network, the Railways is looking ahead with ambitious expansion plans. This includes a Detailed Project Report for a 216-km third line between Jalandhar Cantonment and Jammu Tawi, along with surveys for new lines connecting Jammu-Katra and Jammu/Reasi-Poonch.
To further support local industries, a Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal has been commissioned in Samba, with additional terminals planned for Kathua, Anantnag, and Jammu. Furthermore, four major stations in the region are currently being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to enhance passenger amenities. With tourism in the region hitting a milestone of 2.3 crore arrivals in 2024, these rail advancements are set to provide a robust backbone for both the local economy and the millions of travelers visiting the valley annually.
