Severe Legal Consequences for Footboard Travel

Under Section 156 of the Indian Railway Act, 1989, traveling on the roof, steps, or footboards of any carriage or engine is a punishable offense. This rule also applies to anyone occupying a part of the train not intended for passengers after being warned by a railway servant. Violators face penalties including imprisonment for up to three months, a fine of up to Rs 500, or both. Furthermore, on-ground railway personnel, including the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and ticket examiners, hold the authority to immediately remove offenders from the train.
