Indian Railways launches comprehensive waste management initiative for stations and trains

Indian Railways is taking major steps to improve environmental conservation and cleanliness by rolling out a comprehensive waste management initiative across major railway stations and long-distance trains. Effective September 4 2026 the Railway Board has introduced a formal survey report project aimed at properly categorizing and processing all types of waste generated at railway facilities to transform them into model stations.

Under this new program daily waste collected from major transit hubs will be disposed of efficiently. The key stations covered under this sanitation drive include Bareilly Junction Moradabad Ghaziabad Hardoi Shahjahanpur Haridwar Meerut Dehradun Rampur and Saharanpur. To ensure seamless execution Indian Railways is collaborating closely with local municipal corporations municipal councils and nagar panchayats for systematic garbage disposal.

Onboard Train Sanitation Upgrades

Along with station improvements Indian Railways is also focusing heavily on upgrading sanitation onboard trains. To address persistent passenger complaints regarding overflowing dustbins and unpleasant odors engineers at the Jhansi Workshop under the North Central Railway have successfully developed a robust prototype for a high-capacity waste disposal system tailored for LHB coaches.

This innovative gravity-based system significantly upgrades the storage capacity from the previous 15 to 20 liters to a massive 367.4 liters. The newly engineered setup includes a functional garbage drop box a central connector and a sturdy stainless steel garbage collector tank. This design effectively prevents debris scattering and ensures hygienic waste containment throughout long journeys for the convenience of passengers.
