India First Bullet Train Trial Scheduled For May Or June 2027

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officially announced that trial runs for India's first indigenously constructed bullet train are slated to commence between May and June 2027. Following an anticipated testing phase of two to four months, the government plans for a formal inauguration by the Prime Minister, with commercial passenger operations on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor expected to begin in August 2027.

Corridor Launch and Operations

The initial operational stretch will be the section between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat, with subsequent sections launching progressively. The project is being developed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Progress remains aligned with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision, highlighted by the recent completion of the first indigenous bullet train body frame, which has been sent for squeeze testing, and the readiness of the first test coach.

Infrastructure and Engineering Milestones

Infrastructure development continues at a rapid pace, with civil construction on the Vapi-Surat section targeted for completion by December 2026. The Ahmedabad transit hub is nearing completion, and the High Speed Rail Multimodal Hub at Sabarmati has already secured a Gold Rating from the Indian Green Building Council. To facilitate heavy construction, Indian engineers have deployed 1,000-metric-ton capacity remote-operated cranes at Surat and Anand for girder lifting.

Future High Speed Capabilities

While current operations on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route will utilize B28 trainsets with a design speed of 280 kmph, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited has initiated capability assessments for B35 trainsets, capable of reaching 350 kmph, to support future high-speed corridors.
