India prepares for first bullet train trials by mid 2027

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has provided a comprehensive update on India's inaugural high-speed rail project connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The trial run for the indigenous bullet train is officially scheduled to commence by May or June 2027. Following successful trials, passenger operations are expected to open within two to four months.

India is moving closer to a new era of mass transportation with the ongoing construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. Passengers can look forward to significantly reduced travel times, such as the journey between Vadodara and Mumbai dropping to approximately 90 minutes. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited is driving this massive infrastructure upgrade under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, with domestic manufacturing milestones already underway.

Corridor Phased Completion Timeline

The ambitious high-speed rail project is being rolled out in phases to ensure steady progress. The Surat to Bilimora and Vapi section is targeted for completion by December 2026, with commercial services on this specific stretch slated to launch by August 2027. Meanwhile, the entire corridor connecting Mumbai to Sabarmati is slated for final completion by December 2029, though the government maintains its priority on the early 2027 operational timeline for the initial segment.

Indigenous Manufacturing and Civil Engineering

Significant engineering milestones continue to be achieved across the route. Three major mountain tunnels have already been successfully completed in the Palghar district. On the rolling stock front, the very first body frame of the indigenous bullet train has been manufactured and is currently undergoing rigorous squeeze testing to verify its structural integrity and safety standards.
