India's First Indigenous Bullet Train Takes Shape in Bengaluru

India is moving closer to a historic milestone in high-speed rail technology. The nation's first indigenous bullet train, specifically designed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, is currently being manufactured at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

This "Bharat-made" marvel combines advanced engineering with domestic manufacturing capabilities, ensuring the train is perfectly suited for Indian conditions while offering world-class safety and passenger comfort.

The newly developed train is engineered for impressive performance on the high-speed tracks. While its planned operational speed is set at 249 kmph, the train is designed to achieve a maximum test speed of 280 kmph.

  • Configuration: The approximately 202-metre-long train consists of eight coaches, comprising four motor cars and four trailer cars.
  • Seating Classes: The layout includes seven standard-class coaches with a 3x2 seating arrangement and one premium executive-class coach featuring a 2x2 arrangement.
  • Capacity: The train has an estimated passenger capacity of 557, including dedicated spaces for Divyangjan and Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM).
  • Scalability: To accommodate future operational requirements, two eight-coach trainsets can be coupled together to form a 16-coach formation.

The driver's cabs, located at both ends of the train, are equipped with an intelligent onboard control system. This system supports timely decision-making and ensures seamless coordination with the operation control centre.

Premium Passenger Comfort and Amenities

Passenger convenience has been a central theme in the interior design. The coaches feature ergonomically designed seats developed according to Indian anthropometric requirements, providing ample legroom and comfort.

Key amenities available to travelers include:

  • Modern Lighting and Storage: The interiors feature LED lighting, overhead baggage racks, and additional floor-mounted luggage stands for larger bags.
  • Connectivity: Passengers will have access to power outlets for laptops and mobile devices, as well as a Wi-Fi-based infotainment system offering preloaded entertainment.
  • Information Systems: LCD screens inside the coaches provide real-time updates in English, Hindi, and regional languages, complemented by audio guidance via public address systems.
  • Sanitation: The train is equipped with modern bio-digester toilets designed to minimize effluent generation.

To enhance the travel experience, the train also features a sealed, single-piece gangway for easy movement between compartments and wide windows at every seating row to provide better views of the landscape.

Inclusive Design and Advanced Safety

Accessibility has been integrated into every aspect of the design to ensure high-speed rail travel is inclusive for all. The coach floor is aligned with the platform height to facilitate level boarding, and retractable footsteps are integrated into the doors to minimize the gap between the train and the platform.

For passengers with reduced mobility, the train offers:

  • Wheelchair-friendly doors.
  • Dedicated seating and toilet facilities.
  • Braille-enabled information signage.

Safety is further bolstered by emergency talk-back units installed in passenger cabins and vestibules, allowing travelers to communicate directly with the train crew whenever assistance is required.

To maintain a pleasant environment, each coach is equipped with two heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) units designed to regulate temperature and humidity across various climatic conditions. Additionally, the train incorporates advanced sound insulation to significantly reduce noise and vibration during high-speed travel.
