Trials for Indias First Indigenous Bullet Train Will Begin in May or June 2027
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has officially announced that trials for Indias inaugural indigenous bullet train will commence in May or June 2027. Speaking on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the Namo for Viksit Bharat event in Vadodara, the minister confirmed that the much-awaited train will be inaugurated within two to four months after the successful completion of the testing phase. Commercial operations for the high-speed service are targeted for late 2027, promising a massive leap forward for Indian Railways and passenger travel across the country.
This landmark project strongly aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision of self-reliance. Under this initiative, advanced high-speed trainsets are being developed domestically. The first prototype, codenamed B-28, is expected to be ready by March 2027. Bengaluru-based BEML Limited has been awarded a lucrative contract worth approximately 866.87 crore rupees by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai to manufacture two such advanced prototypes. These state-of-the-art trainsets will be fully capable of reaching speeds of 280 kilometers per hour. Furthermore, the first body frame has already been successfully completed and sent for crucial squeeze testing, with subsequent evaluations to be handled by the Research Design and Standards Organisation.
Infrastructure Progress and Timeline
Infrastructure development for the high-speed rail corridor is progressing rapidly and remains strictly on schedule. The Surat-Vapi section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is slated for completion by December 2026. Meanwhile, the Surat-Bilimora segment, which has been designated as the pioneer stretch where the first bullet train will officially operate, is targeted for 2027. Once the entire route becomes fully operational for the general public, the travel time for a journey from Vadodara to Mumbai will be drastically reduced to approximately 90 minutes, transforming regional commuting.
Broader Railway Achievements
Alongside the high-speed rail mission, Indian Railways continues to record massive strides in overall infrastructure modernization. The government has successfully completed the massive redevelopment of 280 railway stations nationwide and the laying of 36,000 kilometers of new tracks. Additionally, authorities are actively advancing the introduction of Vande Bharat-based cargo trains to further optimize freight movement and boost logistics efficiency across the Indian rail network.
