India will start trial runs of its first indigenous bullet train in May or June 2027
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced major updates for India's ambitious high-speed rail network during the Namo for Viksit Bharat event held in Vadodara. The Minister confirmed that India is rapidly advancing toward its dream of high-speed rail travel with trials of the first made-in-India bullet train scheduled to begin by mid-2027. Here are the key highlights of the announcement: The body shell for the first indigenous high-speed train is completed and dispatched for squeeze testing. Trial runs are officially planned to start between May and June 2027. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the service two to four months after successful trials. Travel time between Vadodara and Mumbai will shrink to just about 1.5 hours.
The landmark project is being built under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision as part of the flagship Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. If construction progresses according to the current schedule, India aims to receive its very first fully operational bullet train by the end of 2027.
Phased Rollout of the High-Speed Corridor
Project execution for the bullet train is carefully divided into multiple phases to ensure smooth rollout and safety testing. The initial phase will see operations launch on the Surat-Bilimora section. Meanwhile, the Surat-Vapi segment is targeted for completion by December 2026. Subsequent phases will progressively cover the Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane, and finally the complete Ahmedabad-Mumbai sections.
Broader Railway Modernization Efforts
Apart from the bullet train project, Minister Vaishnaw also shed light on massive ongoing modernization initiatives across the national transporter. Indian Railways is currently redeveloping 280 major stations to provide world-class amenities to passengers. Additionally, 36,000 kilometers of new tracks are being laid to boost network capacity, and new Vande Bharat cargo trains are being developed to revolutionize and speed up freight operations across the country.
