Amit Shah to Launch India's First LNG Train in Sabarmati
In a landmark move for green mobility, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is set to flag off India's very first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered train on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The historic service will be inaugurated from the Sabarmati Station, marking a significant leap in the Indian Railways' journey toward cleaner energy.
The project, spearheaded by the Ahmedabad Railway Division, introduces a sophisticated dual-fuel system. This technology allows the train to operate seamlessly on both LNG and diesel, ensuring operational flexibility while prioritizing environmental sustainability.
A Major Leap in Green Technology
To bring this vision to life, two 1,400 HP Driving Power Cars (DPCs) have been specifically converted to handle the dual-fuel configuration. Before being introduced to the public, these units underwent rigorous testing, successfully completing over 2,000 kilometres of field trials to ensure safety and efficiency.
The transition to LNG is expected to yield massive benefits for both the environment and the railway's economy:
- Reduced Fuel Dependency: Indian Railways anticipates a reduction in diesel consumption by as much as 40%.
- Lower Emissions: The shift will significantly curb the release of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.
- Cost Efficiency: The initiative is estimated to generate annual fuel cost savings of approximately Rs 23.9 lakh.
The inauguration ceremony is expected to be attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and other regional leaders and officials.
Massive Infrastructure and Safety Upgrades
The launch of the LNG train is part of a much larger wave of railway development. Minister Amit Shah will oversee several other projects valued at more than Rs 1,542 crore, which aim to modernize the region's rail network. These upgrades include:
- The inauguration of the WAG-12 Sabarmati locomotive maintenance shed.
- The implementation of an automatic block signalling system on the Sabarmati-Kalol-Bhandu Motidau and Sabarmati-Sanand-Jakhwada sections.
- The doubling of the Sabarmati-Sarkhej line.
- The flagging off of a WAG-12 electric locomotive.
Strengthening Safety with 'Kavach'
Safety remains a top priority for the railways. During the event, the foundation stone will be laid for the indigenous 'Kavach' safety system. This critical project, costing approximately Rs 411 crore, will cover 404 km across the Ahmedabad-Palanpur and Ahmedabad-Samakhiyali sections.
The 'Kavach' system is designed to act as a fail-safe to prevent train collisions, mitigate the risks of overspeeding, and drastically reduce accidents caused by human error. This follows recent clean energy milestones, such as the introduction of hydrogen-powered services on the Jind-Sonipat route.
