Indore Budhni rail project to bridge distance and boost connectivity in Madhya Pradesh
The construction of the 205-kilometer Indore-Budhni rail line is rapidly advancing, marking a major milestone in Madhya Pradesh’s infrastructure development. Executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), this ambitious project serves as a vital bridge between the commercial hub of Indore and the Budhni junction, strategically located on the primary Bhopal-Nagpur rail route. Passengers and freight operators can expect significant efficiency gains, as the new corridor is projected to reduce the travel distance between Indore and Jabalpur by 68 to 150 kilometers, effectively shaving approximately one hour off current transit times.
Engineering Marvels and Project Scale
The project involves complex engineering feats to navigate the challenging terrain of the Vindhya region. Key specifications for this corridor include:
- Construction of 80 large bridges and 99 small bridges.
- Establishment of 18 new railway stations.
- Development of an 8.64-kilometer modern rail tunnel, set to be among the longest in Central India.
- A dedicated 8.64-kilometer parallel escape tunnel to ensure maximum operational safety through the Dhantalab Ghat section.
As of April 2026, progress is visible on the ground, with excavation work reaching 500 meters for Tunnel 2 and 108 meters for Tunnel 1.
