Indore Station Redevelopment Paused for Shastri Bridge Work

The ambitious redevelopment project for the Indore Railway Station has been temporarily suspended. Railway authorities have decided to shift their immediate focus toward a critical infrastructure requirement: the construction of a new four-lane Shastri Bridge.

Prioritizing the Shastri Bridge Lifeline

The decision stems from the deteriorating condition of the existing 70-year-old Shastri Bridge, which serves as a vital transit link on MG Road. To ensure public safety and maintain urban mobility, the Indore Development Authority (IDA) has been tasked with constructing a modern, wider replacement. This new structure is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete.

Once the new bridge is fully operational, the old structure will be demolished. This demolition is a necessary precursor to clearing the way for the planned expansion of the Indore Railway Station.

Project Scope and Funding Breakdown

The bridge project has been approved by Indian Railways with an estimated cost of approximately ₹139 crore. The funding will be divided as follows:

  • Indian Railways: Will provide full funding for the construction of the new bridge.
  • Indore Municipal Corporation: Will cover all costs associated with the relocation of essential utility infrastructure, including water pipes, sewage lines, and electricity poles.

The new design aims to significantly improve capacity and flow. The structure will be 38 meters longer and two meters higher than the current bridge, stretching from the Divisional Commissioner’s office to the Khadiwala petrol pump. Additionally, service roads will be constructed on both sides to ensure continuous traffic movement.

Other Regional Railway Developments

While the station redevelopment is on hold, several other railway projects in the region are progressing:

Indore-Dahod Rail Line Progress

The Indore-Dahod rail line is nearing its final stages. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) is scheduled to conduct final inspections on October 28 and 29, 2026. This new line is set to integrate four new stations: Pithampur, Sagaur, Gunawad, and Dhar. While operations to Dhar are expected to begin within 25 days, progress on the Tihi tunnel has faced geological challenges, with completion now projected for September-October 2026.

Station Modernization and Environmental Updates

Modernization efforts are also underway at Laxmibai Nagar Railway Station, which is in the final stages of upgrading its infrastructure, including a new 12-meter-wide foot-over bridge. Meanwhile, in a significant legal development, the High Court has issued an interim stay on the felling of over 250,000 trees in the Choral forest, which was originally required for the Simrol-Barwaha railway line project.
