Dec 31 Travel: IRCTC Booking Schedule & Aadhaar Rule Revealed
Planning a trip for Dec 31? Learn the IRCTC booking schedule, Aadhaar authentication rules, and Tatkal timings for New Year travel.

If you are planning a getaway to the hill stations for the New Year, you need to act fast. Indian Railways and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) have announced the official booking schedule for travel on December 31, 2026.
To secure your seat, passengers must be ready to book on November 1, 2026, at 8:00 AM IST. This follows the current Advance Reservation Period (ARP) of 60 days, excluding the date of the journey.
The Ultra-Peak Travel Period
Travel authorities have highlighted that the period from December 20 to January 2 is classified as an ultra-peak period. This surge in demand is driven by several factors, including:
- Christmas celebrations
- New Year's Eve festivities
- School vacations
- Year-end holidays
Due to the massive influx of travelers heading toward popular hill stations, the competition for tickets is expected to be extremely high.
Mandatory Aadhaar Authentication Rule
In a significant update for online travelers, IRCTC has implemented a specific rule to manage the initial rush. For the first 15 minutes of the booking window, only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be permitted to secure tickets online.
To ensure a smooth booking experience and avoid being locked out during those critical first minutes, passengers are strongly advised to link their IRCTC accounts with their Aadhaar details well in advance.
Tatkal Booking Timings
For those who are unable to secure tickets through the advance booking window, Tatkal reservations will be available on December 30, 2026. The timings are as follows:
- AC Classes: 10:00 AM IST
- Sleeper and 2S Classes: 11:00 AM IST
