IRCTC & QCI to Launch Digital Food Quality Audits

The IRCTC food quality audit system is receiving a massive technological boost to ensure passenger safety and hygiene. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Quality Council of India (QCI) to implement an independent, technology-driven inspection mechanism for food served on trains and at railway stations.

Tech-Driven Surprise Inspections

Formalized on October 15, 2026, by IRCTC representative Sudhir Warrier and QCI representative Subroto Ghosh, this initiative introduces a layer of strict accountability. Certified QCI experts will conduct surprise inspections of both mobile catering units on trains and static catering units at stations.

These audits will occur on quarterly and semi-annual cycles. To ensure total transparency and prevent any manual errors or tampering, inspectors will utilize a specialized mobile application to record digital evidence, including:

  • Geo-tagging to verify the exact location of the audit.
  • Time stamps to ensure real-time reporting.
  • Photographic documentation of food and kitchen conditions.

Strict FSSAI Compliance and Rapid Action

The primary focus of these inspections is to ensure strict adherence to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations. The audit teams will evaluate several critical areas, such as:

  • Food preparation and storage facility standards.
  • Personal hygiene and the medical fitness of catering staff.
  • The strict segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items.
  • Temperature control for perishable goods.
  • Effective pest management protocols.

Fast-Track Accountability

To address passenger complaints effectively, the new system mandates that all audit reports must be submitted within 24 hours. This rapid reporting window is designed to enable IRCTC to take swift corrective actions against vendors who fail to meet the required safety and quality benchmarks.

"By leveraging digital technology, the railways aim to strictly monitor standards and ensure that food served across the network meets high safety and quality benchmarks."

This third-party audit mechanism is a direct response to frequent passenger concerns regarding food accountability, aiming to bring a new era of transparency to railway catering services.
