IRCTC Refund Guidelines: Claim Full Fare for Cancelled Trains

Following the massive train cancellations on October 10, 2026, caused by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests in Delhi, passengers at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations have faced significant travel disruptions. To assist those affected, Indian Railways has clarified the official IRCTC refund guidelines to ensure passengers can claim their money back easily.

Full Refund for Railway-Initiated Cancellations

If Indian Railways cancels a train, passengers are entitled to a full refund. In these specific cases, no cancellation charges or clerkage fees will be deducted from your total fare.

E-Tickets: Automated Refund Process

For those who booked e-tickets through the IRCTC website or mobile application, the process is entirely seamless:

  • No manual request required: You do not need to file a separate cancellation application.
  • Automated credit: The full fare will be automatically credited back to your original payment method.
  • Timeline: Expect the amount to reflect in your account within three to seven working days.

To monitor your money, log into the IRCTC portal, go to 'My Account', and select 'Ticket Refund History'.

Counter Tickets: Visit the Station

If you purchased your ticket at a physical railway reservation counter, the process is different:

  • You must visit a computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter to process the refund.
  • The full fare will be refunded to you in cash without any clerkage charges.

Rules for Passenger-Initiated Cancellations

It is important to distinguish between railway-led cancellations and those made by the passenger. Under the new regulations implemented on April 1, 2026:

Passengers will receive no refund if they cancel their ticket less than eight hours before the scheduled departure of the train.

Security Warning and Status Verification

IRCTC has issued a stern warning regarding potential fraud. Travelers are urged to remain vigilant:

  • Do not share passwords, OTPs, or sensitive banking details with anyone.
  • Avoid suspicious links that claim to offer "expedited refunds."

To check the real-time status of your train, always use official channels such as the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) website or app, or dial the official railway helpline at 139.
