IRIMEE Jamalpur Seminar on Rolling Stock Tech

The Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE) is preparing for a significant IRIMEE Jamalpur seminar scheduled for October 30-31, 2026. Titled "Engineering Rolling Stock Technology," this two-day event will serve as a vital platform for discussing the future of railway modernization and operational efficiency.

Focus on Modernization and Safety

The seminar is set to dive deep into the latest technological advancements shaping the industry. Key topics of discussion will include:

  • The evolution of the Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat platforms.
  • Modern wagon policies to streamline freight operations.
  • The implementation of jerk-free coupler technology to improve passenger comfort.
  • Advanced safety protocols and operational efficiency.

High-Level Experts and Academic Ties

Under the supervision of IRIMEE Dean Prem Prakash, the event will bring together a distinguished group of railway leaders. G. Subbarao, General Manager of South Central Railway, will serve as the chief guest and speaker, with P. Ananth, General Manager of South Western Railway, attending as a special guest. The gathering will also include various zonal General Managers, industry experts, and retired railway officials.

This technical exchange is bolstered by a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with IIT Kharagpur on September 26, 2026. This partnership is dedicated to training officials in advanced maintenance, traction, propulsion, and electrical safety.

The Rise of Hydrogen-Powered Trains

A major highlight of the seminar will be the progress of India's indigenous hydrogen-powered trainsets. This follows a massive milestone achieved on December 10, 2025, with the completion of the nation's first 10-coach hydrogen trainset. This zero-emission vessel represents a leap forward in the Ministry of Railways' clean energy mission.

Key technical details of the hydrogen trainset include:

  • Propulsion: 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell system.
  • Environmental Impact: Produces zero carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Speed: Capable of reaching 75 km/h.
  • Operational Progress: Successful trials on the Jind-Sonipat section, covering over 1,200 kilometers since July 17, 2026.
