Passengers traveling on the Ispat Express (12871) have seen a significant legal victory against the South Eastern Railway. The Seraikella District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Jharkhand has ordered the railway authorities to pay ₹35,000 in compensation following a massive service delay.
The 8-Hour Delay: Tatanagar to Sambalpur
The legal dispute originated from a journey taken in September 2024. A passenger, who had booked two sleeper-class tickets for travel between Tatanagar and Sambalpur, faced extreme inconvenience when the train failed to arrive on time. While the Ispat Express was scheduled to reach its destination at 3:50 PM, it actually arrived 8 hours and 48 minutes behind schedule.
Compensation Breakdown and Deadlines
The commission, led by President Sunil Kumar Singh and members Pradeep Kumar Mishra and Sanju Shahi, issued its order on September 2. Although the passenger had initially sought damages amounting to ₹4,50,000, the court finalized the following compensation:
