North Western Railway approves major upgrade for Jaisalmer rail line

The Jodhpur Division of the North Western Railway has received official approval for a comprehensive renovation project of the Raikabag-Jaisalmer rail section. This vital infrastructure upgrade is estimated at a total cost of Rs 713 crore and aims to significantly enhance the safety and efficiency of rail travel in the border region. The project encompasses the complete renewal of 291 kilometers of track, specifically involving the total replacement of rails across 268 kilometers, while the remaining 23 kilometers will undergo a thorough replacement of existing sleepers with new ones. These details were confirmed in an official announcement published on August 25, 2026.

Strategic Importance and Network Strengthening

Anurag Tripathi, the Divisional Railway Manager for Jodhpur, stated that the work is essential for strengthening the rail network leading to the border district of Jaisalmer. He emphasized that the modernization will ensure both the safe and smooth operation of trains across the entire division. Given Jaisalmer's high strategic importance for national security, as well as its status as a major global destination for international tourists and spiritual pilgrims, this large-scale renovation project is considered critically vital for regional connectivity.
