Jammu Division to Boost Solar Capacity to 2.55 MW

The Jammu Division of Northern Railway is making a significant leap toward green energy by aggressively expanding its solar power infrastructure. The division is set to increase its total installed and planned solar capacity to a massive 2.55 MW, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable railway operations.
Current Solar Footprint in Jammu Division
At present, the division already utilizes 1.745 MW of solar capacity across five major railway premises. One of the most prominent contributors to this green energy pool is the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Station, which currently operates a substantial 1 MW solar plant.
Upcoming Expansion and New Projects
To reach the ambitious 2.55 MW target, the division is rolling out 18 new solar plants with a combined capacity of 808 kWp. These developments are spread across key locations to maximize energy efficiency:
- Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Station: A new 450 kWp solar plant is currently under construction. Contracted to M/s Sankalp Realmart Pvt. Ltd., work commenced on September 12, 2026, and is expected to be completed by December 2026.
- Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur Station: Plans are in motion to install 13 solar plants at this station, which will add a total of 358 kWp to the division's capacity.
A Vision for Net-Zero Emissions
According to Vishal Rathi, Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer, these installations are part of a strategic move to modernize the division's energy consumption. Vivek Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) for the Jammu Division, emphasized that the long-term objective is to transition every station within the division to solar energy.
This initiative is a crucial component of the broader Indian Railways mission to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. By reducing dependence on the conventional power grid, the division not only lowers its carbon footprint but also expects to see significant annual savings in electricity expenditure. These funds are slated to be reinvested into enhancing passenger amenities, ensuring a better travel experience for commuters.
