Janakpur-Ayodhya Train: Successful Trial Run Completed!
India and Nepal successfully complete a trial run for the proposed Janakpur-Ayodhya train service to boost the Ramayana Circuit.

A historic milestone has been achieved in the rail connectivity between India and Nepal. Officials from both nations have successfully completed a trial run for the proposed Janakpur Ayodhya train service, marking a major step toward linking these two significant locations.
Details of the Successful Test Run
The trial, conducted on Thursday, November 5, 2026, was a critical test of the cross-border infrastructure. An Indian special train, consisting of two WDP 4D locomotives and seven coaches, successfully traversed the route from Jayanagar in India to the Kurtha station in Janakpur, Nepal.
The inspection involved high-level officials from both sides. On the Indian side, representatives from the East Central Railway in Hajipur, led by the Additional General Manager, oversaw the proceedings. The Nepali delegation was led by the Managing Director of the Nepal Railway Company, Paribesh Parajuli, alongside various Dhanusha district officials, including the Assistant Chief District Officer and the Superintendent of Police.
Strengthening the Ramayana Circuit
This new rail link is designed to connect the sacred birthplaces of Goddess Sita and Lord Ram. By establishing a direct connection, the project aims to bolster the 'Ramayana Circuit' and significantly strengthen the cultural and bilateral ties between India and Nepal.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri formally confirmed the successful completion of the trial during a diplomatic meeting in Kathmandu with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
Operational Framework and Security
While the trial was successful, a formal commencement date for regular services has not yet been established. Officials noted that technical, administrative, and security preparations are still ongoing. Key areas currently under discussion include:
- Maintenance: Establishing responsibilities for the upkeep of the train rakes.
- Security Protocols: Coordinating efforts between the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), and local Nepali law enforcement.
- Operational Management: Finalizing how the service will run within both territories.
The service is expected to be officially inaugurated during Prime Minister Balendra Shah's upcoming state visit to India. It is anticipated that initial operations will utilize Indian train rakes, which will be managed by Nepal once they enter its territory.
