Jhansi-Bina 153km Third Line Open: Delhi-Mumbai Corridor Relief

Indian Railways has officially marked a massive infrastructure milestone with the completion of the 153-kilometer third rail line connecting Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh to Bina in Madhya Pradesh. This strategic project is designed to significantly decongest the high-traffic Delhi-Mumbai corridor, providing much-needed breathing room for both passenger and freight services.
A Major Boost for Bundelkhand Connectivity
The newly commissioned line spans through the Jhansi and Lalitpur districts of Uttar Pradesh and the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh. Originally sanctioned by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in August 2016, the project was completed at a final cost of ₹2,274 crore.
By adding this third track, the railway is set to provide crucial capacity relief to the Bundelkhand region, directly benefiting 32 railway stations along the route. The infrastructure is engineered to support speeds between 120 and 150 kilometers per hour, which is expected to enhance punctuality and streamline traffic regulation.
Successful Commissioning and Speed Trials
The final phase of this massive undertaking concluded with the successful commissioning of the Agaosud-Bina section. The technical milestones were met in quick succession:
- Electrification: On October 12, 2026, J.C.S. Bora, Principal Chief Electrical Engineer of North Central Railway, inspected and certified the 25 KV electrification of the section.
- Safety & Speed: Following a rigorous safety inspection, Commissioner of Railway Safety (North Eastern Region) E. Srinivas conducted a successful speed trial at 120 km/h on October 13.
First Train to Traverse the New Line
The new section officially entered service on October 15, 2026, when the Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express (Train No. 15066) became the first train to run on the newly completed track.
Execution and Temporary Disruptions
The project was executed by the Jhansi Division of North Central Railway, working in close coordination with the West Central Railway for the final nine-kilometer stretch. To integrate the new third line between Bina and Agaosud, extensive yard remodeling was required.
During the final stages of work between October 11 and October 15, passengers may have experienced minor delays. Approximately 17 train services, including those passing through Bhopal, Rani Kamalapati, and Sant Hirdaram Nagar, were affected by these necessary route changes and remodeling activities.
