Jhansi-Bina Third Line Open: Relief for Delhi-Mumbai Route
Indian Railways has operationalized the 153-km Jhansi-Bina third line to ease Delhi-Mumbai corridor congestion. First train: Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express.

Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone in infrastructure development by officially operationalizing the 153-kilometer Jhansi-Bina third railway line. This strategic project is set to drastically reduce congestion on the heavily trafficked New Delhi-Mumbai corridor, ensuring smoother transit for both passengers and freight.
The final 8-kilometer stretch, connecting Agasod to Bina, was commissioned on October 15, 2026. Marking a historic moment for the route, the Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express became the first train to traverse the newly completed section.
A Massive Investment in Bundelkhand Connectivity
Spanning across the Jhansi and Lalitpur districts in Uttar Pradesh and the Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh, the project represents a massive engineering feat. The total cost of the project stood at Rs 2,274 crore, an increase from the initial estimate of Rs 2,002 crore.
Originally approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in August 2016, this line was designed to unlock the operational potential of the Bundelkhand region. By adding a third line, the railways can now manage much higher volumes of traffic without the delays caused by single-track bottlenecks.
Technical Specifications and High-Speed Infrastructure
The construction involved complex engineering to ensure durability and speed. The technical highlights of the new line include:
- Bridge Network: A total of 12 important bridges, 26 major bridges, and 311 minor bridges were constructed.
- Track Quality: The line utilizes 60kg 90 UTS heavy rails supported by a deep ballast cushion.
- Speed Capability: While the line supports operational speeds of up to 130 km/h, it has been designed to handle speeds of 150-160 km/h.
- Electrification: The 25 KV electrification system was successfully finalized on October 12, 2026.
The safety and speed trials were conducted under the supervision of Commissioner of Railway Safety, E. Srinivas, on October 15, 2026, leading to the official authorization for train operations.
Widespread Impact on Regional Stations
The commissioning of this third line is expected to provide immediate relief to 32 railway stations along the route. This enhancement directly benefits transit efficiency for several key districts, including:
- Jhansi
- Lalitpur
- Datia
- Sagar
North Central Railway CPRO Shivam Sharma confirmed that the authorization follows successful safety inspections, paving the way for a new era of efficient rail travel in the region.
