Kalka-Shimla Train Services Suspended Until Dec 31, 2026

The iconic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla railway line is facing a major setback as Indian Railways has officially extended the suspension of most train services on the route. Due to significant repair delays near the Gumma Railway Station, the suspension will now remain in place until December 31, 2026.
The Railway Board issued this updated directive on October 18, 2026, overriding previous plans that had aimed for a resumption of services by the end of November. The prolonged closure is a direct consequence of severe monsoon damage that struck the region in late August 2026.
Why the UNESCO World Heritage Line is Closed
The infrastructure crisis was triggered by heavy rainfall around August 29-30, 2026, which caused a critical section of the track to collapse. The damage is located near Bridge No. 57, in the stretch between the Taksal and Gumma/Koti stations.
During the monsoon, approximately 10 to 15 meters of earth beneath the tracks were washed away, leaving the railway infrastructure without necessary support. Efforts to fix the damage have been a constant struggle against the elements; subsequent rainfall has repeatedly destroyed newly laid construction materials and crate walls, stalling progress for engineers.
Impacted Train Services and Schedules
The extended suspension affects nearly all primary train services operating on this historic route. Passengers should note that the following trains will not be operating:
- Up Trains: 52457, 52451, 52459, 52455, and the Up Mix train from Kalka to Shimla.
- Down Trains: 52458, 52452, 52460, 52456, and the Down Mix train from Shimla to Kalka.
In addition to the Gumma station issues, the Dharampur-Kalka section also remains under suspension until November 30, 2026, due to ongoing bridge construction work in that area.
Limited Connectivity Options
To provide some level of transport for commuters, Northern Railway officials have arranged for two daily trains to operate between Dharampur and Shimla. These limited services follow this schedule:
- A service departing Dharampur for Shimla at approximately 5:45 PM.
- A return service departing Shimla the following morning at 7:50 AM.
Tourism and Local Economy Under Pressure
The decision to extend the suspension has sparked significant concern among the local community. Stakeholders, including hoteliers, shopkeepers, and taxi operators, have warned that the disruption is hitting the Shimla tourism industry hard, especially as the region enters its peak festive season.
