Kanchausi Railway Crossing Closure: 8-Day DFC Repair Block

Commuters traveling on the Delhi-Howrah rail route are facing significant travel disruptions. The Kanchausi railway crossing, designated as crossing number 5C, is set to undergo a total shutdown for eight consecutive days.
The closure is scheduled to take place from October 22 to October 29. This shutdown is necessary to facilitate essential maintenance and repair work on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) tracks. Lalji Anand, the Deputy Chief Project Manager of DFC Tundla, has confirmed that the crossing will remain closed to all vehicular traffic for 24 hours every day throughout this eight-day period.
Major Impact on Local Commuters
The closure is expected to cause heavy disruption for travelers moving between several key areas, including:
- Rasulabad
- Kanpur Dehat
- Kannauj
- Farrukhabad
- Auraiya
Because the crossing will be completely blocked, motorists will be forced to take alternative routes, which will add approximately five kilometers to their usual journey. To avoid major delays, travelers are advised to utilize the following alternatives:
- Overbridge number three at Parjani
- The route leading toward Sookhampur
Festive Season Concerns Raised
The timing of this maintenance work has sparked significant concern among local residents. The eight-day closure coincides with the major festivals of Diwali and Dhanteras, a period when travel and logistics are typically at their highest. The disruption is expected to affect thousands of people, including traders, farmers, students, and patients.
In an attempt to mitigate the logistical difficulties, community members have approached authorities with a request. They have asked officials to consider opening the crossing during the night hours—specifically from 6 PM to 6 AM—to provide some relief during the festive season.
Why the DFC Repairs are Essential
This maintenance is part of the ongoing infrastructure upgrades managed by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL). The DFCCIL is responsible for constructing and operating freight corridors designed to separate freight traffic from passenger lines. This separation is a critical step in enhancing the overall efficiency and safety of high-density railway routes across the nation.
