Kanpur Etawah passenger train gets delayed during Raksha Bandhan rush

The Kanpur-Etawah passenger train experienced a significant delay of one hour and 20 minutes during the Raksha Bandhan festival period, causing overcrowding at Achhalda station. Passengers waiting at the platform were left stranded as the train's arrival was pushed back significantly amid the high travel demand typical of the holiday. The festival period between August 25 and August 27 put immense pressure on Indian Railways.

During this peak travel window, thousands of commuters across the National Capital Region faced acute travel difficulties. These included severe seat shortages and exhausted waiting lists on key routes traveling from Delhi and Gurugram toward Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. Major services such as the Bhuj–Bareilly Express and the Bhagat Ki Kothi–Kamakhya Express reported no available capacity, with some status codes showing 'Regret' for potential passengers.

Infrastructure and Network Challenges

Operational challenges for the network were compounded by earlier infrastructure projects. Specifically, around August 22, 2026, 13 passenger trains were cancelled and numerous express services were diverted or controlled to facilitate double rail line construction between Gorakhpur Cantt and Unaula. These cumulative pressures on the rail network have led local commuter groups to urge the Railway Ministry to increase the frequency of special festival trains to alleviate the recurring congestion seen at major hubs like Kanpur Central and its surrounding transit points.
