The Halharpur railway crossing in Kanpur is set for a massive transformation. In a significant move to decongest the area and streamline movement, railway and highway authorities have finalized plans for critical infrastructure upgrades, including a second overbridge and a brand-new underpass.
Joint Inspection Finalizes Infrastructure Roadmap
On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, a high-level joint inspection was conducted at the Halharpur site. The team, comprising officials from both the railway and highway departments, aimed to solidify the execution strategy for these upcoming projects. These developments are designed to complement the ongoing improvements being made to the Jhansi-Lucknow railway line.
Key Project Highlights
- New Overbridge: A second overbridge is planned to manage the increasing traffic load.
- New Underpass: A dedicated underpass will be constructed to provide seamless transit.
- Pukhrayan Expansion: The existing Pukhrayan underpass will be widened by an additional two meters to enhance capacity.
Mughal Road Widening and Connectivity Boost
These railway-related improvements are part of a much larger vision: the widening of the Mughal Road. This ambitious project aims to convert the route passing through Bhognipur, Ghatampur, Jahanabad, and Bindki Road into a modern four-lane thoroughfare.
Overcoming Delays
While land acquisition for the road widening had been completed some time ago, the project faced setbacks when the tender process stalled. However, following active intervention by MLC Avinash Singh Chauhan in the Legislative Council, the momentum has been restored. The Public Works Department (PWD) has already conducted a re-inspection of the site to ensure the project moves forward without further hindrance.
