Kanpur Railway Infrastructure Upgrades: Track Strengthening Underway

Intensive track strengthening operations are currently underway near the Railway Loco Colony in Kanpur, marking a significant step in the ongoing Kanpur railway infrastructure upgrades. To accelerate the maintenance and reinforcement of the rail infrastructure at this site, laborers are working around the clock in both day and night shifts.
The ₹1100 Crore Elevated Track Project
This initiative is part of a much larger effort to modernize the rail network in the Kanpur region. One of the most significant developments is the ambitious elevated railway track project, which spans 15.51 kilometers from Anwarganj to Mandhana. Estimated at ₹1100 crore, the project is designed to eliminate 17 railway crossings, a move that will benefit approximately 5 lakh residents by drastically reducing traffic congestion.
As of September 23, 2026, 90% of the required land for this project has been acquired. Ongoing efforts are currently focused on securing the remaining 10% from the National Highway Authority. The project will also lead to the eventual closure of the Rawatpur railway station and the construction of a new 'Atal Bihari Bajpayee' elevated station located near CSJMU University.
Festive Special Services and Capacity Expansion
To accommodate the high passenger volume expected during the Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals, Indian Railways has launched several special services. Running from October 16 to November 26, 2026, these services include a Vande Bharat Express Special connecting New Delhi and Patna, which will feature a 5-minute halt at Kanpur Central. Additionally, two other Puja special trains will pass through both Kanpur Central and Govindpuri.
Long-term infrastructure plans for the city include expanding Kanpur's terminal capacity from 26 to 40 originating trains and the development of a new mega coaching complex. Furthermore, under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Govindpuri and Panki Dham are being upgraded as satellite terminals to help alleviate the operational pressure on Kanpur Central.
Progress on the Lucknow-Kanpur RRTS
The Lucknow-Kanpur RRTS (Namo Bharat train) project is also making strides, with the project currently in the final stages of its Detailed Project Report and Alternative Analysis Report. The project cost for this high-speed link is set to be shared by the LDA, KDA, and the Unnao-Shuklaganj Development Authority.
