Katra-Banihal Special Train: New services announced to help passengers stranded by NH-44 landslides

In response to the severe disruption of road traffic on National Highway-44 caused by heavy rainfall and landslides, Northern Railway has introduced special unreserved train services. These trains are scheduled to operate between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Banihal on April 9 and April 10, 2026. This initiative aims to assist thousands of tourists and passengers who have been stranded due to the closure of the critical Jammu-Srinagar highway link.

What are the timings and stoppages for the special trains?

The railway administration has designated train numbers 04689 and 04690 for these operations. These trains will provide essential connectivity between the two major points, covering the distance in approximately two to three hours. The services include stoppages at Sangaldan and Reasi railway stations to accommodate passengers along the route.

The details for the special trains are as follows:

Train Number From To Departure Arrival
04689 SMVD Katra Banihal 10:10 AM 12:20 PM
04690 Banihal SMVD Katra 02:00 PM 05:00 PM

Why were these special train services introduced?

The decision was taken following several landslides, including a major one at Shalgarhi in Banihal on April 8, 2026. The 270-km long highway has been repeatedly blocked since April 6, leading to over 1,200 vehicles being stranded between Ramban and Banihal. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal emphasized that passenger safety is the priority, and the special train service offers a safe alternative to the dangerous road conditions.

The Ramban administration and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alyas Khan are currently monitoring road clearance operations. Until the highway is safely reopened for traffic, these special trains will serve as a reliable mode of transport for those looking to reach their destinations in the region.
