Katra Trains Fully Booked: Massive Festive Rush on Delhi-Jammu Routes

Travelers planning to celebrate Diwali and Chhath Puja with their families are facing a significant challenge. A severe shortage of confirmed train tickets has hit major routes originating from Delhi towards Jammu Tawi, Katra, and Udhampur.
Reports indicate that most major long-distance trains passing through Pathankot to these destinations are already fully booked through November 25, 2026. As passengers scramble to secure travel for the festive season, the demand has reached an extreme level.
Indian Railways Launches Massive Festive Operation
To manage the overwhelming passenger surge, Indian Railways has rolled out a comprehensive festive operation. From October 1 to November 30, 2026, the railway network will facilitate:
- 3.4 lakh regular train trips.
- 8,454 special train trips.
This massive scale-up includes more than 16,000 additional service trips compared to the previous year, aiming to ease the pressure on the existing network.
Northern Railway Special Services for Jammu Division
Northern Railway has specifically introduced eight festival special services to connect the Jammu Division with major national hubs. This includes four pairs of special trains operating between New Delhi and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra.
Key Special Train Schedules
Passengers should take note of the following specific service details:
- Train Nos. 04081/04082: Scheduled to operate from New Delhi between October 26 and November 6, 2026, with return legs from Katra running from October 27 to November 7, 2026.
- Train Nos. 04485/04486: Operated from New Delhi on October 18 and October 20, 2026, with return journeys from Katra on October 19 and 21, 2026.
Currently, there are approximately 15 trains operating daily between Delhi and Katra. For those prioritizing speed, the Vande Bharat Express remains the fastest option, with a travel time of roughly 8 hours and 20 minutes.
Despite these capacity expansions, railway officials acknowledge that the surge in pilgrims and holiday travelers has outpaced the current supply. Passengers are strongly advised to check their PNR status following chart preparation to confirm their final travel details.
