Kavach 4.0: Safety Boost for Karchana-Mirzapur Section
North Central Railway commissions Kavach 4.0 on the 69.5 km Karchana-Mirzapur section to enhance safety on the Delhi-Howrah corridor.
The North Central Railway has achieved a major safety milestone by successfully commissioning the indigenously developed Kavach 4.0 automatic train protection system. The deployment spans a 69.5-route kilometre section between Karchana and Mirzapur, significantly strengthening the safety infrastructure on the critical Delhi–Howrah corridor.
Expanding the Kavach Network
With the successful integration of this section, the total network covered by the Kavach system under the North Central Railway has now expanded to 785 route kilometres. This rollout is a key part of the national initiative to modernize railway safety protocols and reduce human error.
Advanced Safety Features of Kavach 4.0
Kavach 4.0 is certified to Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4), which represents the highest global standard for safety integrity. The system is designed to act as a comprehensive train collision avoidance tool, offering several vital protections:
- Prevention of SPAD: It prevents incidents where a train might pass a signal at danger.
- Automatic Braking: The system can automatically apply brakes to prevent potential accidents.
- Speed Monitoring: It provides constant monitoring of train speeds to ensure strict safety compliance.
- Adverse Weather Support: The technology is designed to enhance operational reliability during difficult conditions, such as dense fog, where visibility is limited.
Technical Implementation and Reliability
To ensure high precision, the system includes direct interfaces with existing electronic interlocking systems. Communication between stations is facilitated via optical fibre cables, which helps in maintaining superior location accuracy across the network. This technological leap ensures that the Karchana-Mirzapur section is now better equipped to handle heavy traffic with enhanced safety and reliability.
