Kerala Railway Revolution: ₹3,795 Cr Budget Hike & Mangaluru Zone Fix
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has laid out a transformative roadmap for Kerala's rail network. Following a high-level meeting with Members of Parliament on September 21, 2026, the Ministry has moved to address long-standing operational bottlenecks and significantly ramp up financial investments in the state.
Streamlining Mangaluru Operations
One of the primary focus areas was the Mangaluru railway sector, which has historically faced operational difficulties. The previous decision to divide the Mangaluru sector into three separate zones had created significant complications for railway management and efficiency.
To resolve these issues and ensure smoother operations, a strategic decision has been reached to keep Mangaluru under the South Western Railway (SWR) zone. This move is expected to simplify management and reduce the complexities that previously hindered the sector's performance.
Massive Financial Boost for Kerala
The scale of development planned for Kerala is backed by a monumental increase in funding. Minister Vaishnaw highlighted a dramatic shift in how the railway budget is allocated to the state, emphasizing the government's commitment to modernizing the network.
- Current Allocation (2026-27): ₹3,795 crores
- Previous Allocation (2014): ₹372 crores
This represents a tenfold increase in budgetary support, providing the necessary capital to drive large-scale infrastructure projects across the state.
Collaborative Infrastructure Planning
The push for development is being handled through close coordination between the Union and State governments. In addition to engaging with MPs, Minister Vaishnaw has held discussions with Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan to align railway infrastructure goals with state requirements.
