Khandwa-Tukaithad Railway Line: New Trains & Electrification

The dream of seamless connectivity on the Khandwa-Tukaithad railway line is nearing reality. Following the successful completion of the gauge conversion between Khandwa and Tukaithad, the focus has now shifted toward operationalizing passenger services and upgrading infrastructure to meet growing commuter needs.
Immediate Connectivity via Diesel Trains
While full electrification is a long-term goal, the railway administration is exploring ways to provide immediate relief to travelers. During a high-level meeting held at the South Central Railway headquarters in Secunderabad, officials discussed the feasibility of running diesel-powered passenger trains on this newly converted section.
This strategic move aims to bridge the connectivity gap until the complete electrification of the line is achieved, which is currently targeted for July 2027.
Rapid Infrastructure Expansion
The development of the Khandwa-Akola route is progressing at a significant pace. Beyond the completed gauge conversion, several key infrastructure milestones are currently in motion:
- Track Laying: Work to complete track laying from Tukaithad to Khaknar and Usarni is expected to be finalized within the next two months.
- Gauge Conversion: The broader Mhow-Khandwa-Akola broad-gauge project is advancing rapidly, providing a vital link for the region.
New Routes and Passenger Demands
With the infrastructure nearing completion, there is a strong push from committee members and local representatives to enhance service frequency. Key demands being discussed include:
- Extending current train services from Khandwa to Sanawad to reach Omkareshwar station.
- Initiating entirely new passenger services specifically to serve the Tukaithad area.
Clarification on Recent Services
In a recent development, a one-day special passenger train was operated between Khandwa and Tukaithad on October 15, 2026. However, railway officials were quick to address public confusion, clarifying that rumors regarding the commencement of regular services on October 10 were unfounded. The administration remains positive about improving passenger amenities and rolling out regular services as the electrification and track works progress.
